Arethas of the Kiev Caves

Venerable Arethas the Recluse of the Kiev Caves.

Arethas was a monk of the Kiev Caves who secretly hoarded wealth in his cell. When thieves stole it, he raged and blamed the innocent, until in a vision during illness he saw angels and demons contending for his soul.

Repenting, he thanked God for the loss and thereafter lived as a recluse in thanksgiving and prayer, reposing in the twelfth century.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Arethas of the Kiev Caves is commemorated on October 24. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 6 of the civil calendar.
