St. John Chrysostom, the golden-mouthed preacher, was Archbishop of Constantinople at the turn of the fifth century. The greatest homilist of the Church, he expounded the Scriptures to his flock, defended the poor, and rebuked the powerful without fear, for which he was twice driven into exile; he died on the road in exile, with the words Glory to God for all things on his lips.
The Divine Liturgy most often celebrated in the Orthodox Church bears his name, and he is counted among the Three Holy Hierarchs. His repose is commemorated on November 13.
