John in the Well

Venerable John who lived in a well.

St. John was an ascetic of Egypt who, according to tradition, lived for many years in a dry well near a village, practicing prayer and fasting in complete solitude. He was known for his humility and for the gift of foresight.

He reposed in peace, and the Greek synaxarion keeps his memory on March 15 and again on March 30.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, John in the Well is commemorated on March 15. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 28 of the civil calendar.
