St. John Maximovitch, Archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco, wonderworker of the twentieth century.
St. John (Maximovitch) was born in Russia in 1896 and served as a bishop of the Russian Church abroad in Shanghai, Western Europe and finally San Francisco, where he reposed in 1966. He was renowned for his severe asceticism, ceaseless prayer and care for orphans and the poor.
He was glorified as a saint in 1994, and his incorrupt relics rest in the cathedral in San Francisco. He is honored throughout the Orthodox world as a wonderworker of our own time.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, John Maximovitch of San Francisco is commemorated on July 2. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 15 of the civil calendar.
