John of Zichna

Venerable John, Bishop of Zichna, founder of the Monastery of the Forerunner near Serres.

Venerable John was Bishop of Zichna in Macedonia in the fourteenth century. Together with his uncle Joachim he founded and built up the monastery of the Honourable Forerunner near Serres, which became one of the great monastic centres of northern Greece. He reposed in peace there.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, John of Zichna is commemorated on December 12. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 25 of the civil calendar.
