Alexander of Jerusalem

Hieromartyr Alexander, Bishop of Jerusalem, disciple of Clement of Alexandria and friend of Origen.

May 16

Alexander studied at Alexandria under Clement and became a bishop in Cappadocia, where he was imprisoned as a confessor under Septimius Severus. Released, he went to Jerusalem and was chosen to share the see with the aged bishop Narcissus.

He founded a great library in Jerusalem and ordained Origen a priest. In the persecution of Decius he was imprisoned at Caesarea, where he died around 250.

December 12

The hieromartyr Alexander was a pupil of Clement of Alexandria and a friend of Origen. Bishop first in Cappadocia, he was chosen to share the see of Jerusalem, where he founded a library and a school. In the persecution of Decius he confessed Christ and died in prison at Caesarea in the middle of the third century.

On the New Calendar, Alexander of Jerusalem is commemorated on May 16. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 29 of the civil calendar.
