Theodore of Vrsac

Hieromartyr Theodore, Bishop of Vrsac, flayed alive by the Turks.

Theodore was bishop of Vrsac in the Banat and in 1594 led the Serbs of the region in an uprising against Ottoman rule. When the uprising failed he was captured and, refusing to renounce his faith, was flayed alive.

He is honored by the Serbian Church as a hieromartyr.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Theodore of Vrsac is commemorated on May 16. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 29 of the civil calendar.
