  Theodore the Sanctified

  Venerable, Θεόδωρος

  St. Theodore the Sanctified was the beloved disciple of St. Pachomios the Great in fourth-century Egypt. Coming to Tabennisi as a youth, he so gave himself to obedience and prayer that Pachomios loved him as a son, and after the death of his elder he guided the great communities of monks, healing divisions and strengthening the brotherhood in the common life.

• Alexander of Jerusalem

  Hierarch, Αλέξανδρος Ιεροσολύμων

  Alexander studied at Alexandria under Clement and became a bishop in Cappadocia, where he was imprisoned as a confessor under Septimius Severus. Released, he went to Jerusalem and was chosen to share the see with the aged bishop Narcissus.

• Nicholas Mystikos

  Hierarch, Νικόλαος ο Μυστικός

  Nicholas was a learned official (mystikos) of the imperial court and disciple of Patriarch Photios before being raised to the patriarchal throne in 901. He resisted the fourth marriage of the Emperor Leo VI, was deposed for it, and later restored.

  Martyr, Αββάδες της Μονής Αγίου Σάββα

  The monks of the Lavra of Saint Sabbas in the Judean desert were attacked by Arab raiders seeking plunder. Finding nothing, the attackers tortured and killed many of the brethren, some by smoke in a cave.

• Makarios Notaras of Corinth

  Hierarch, Μακάριος Νοταράς

  Makarios was born in Trikala of Corinthia in 1731 and was chosen Archbishop of Corinth in 1764. Forced from his see after the Orlov revolt, he devoted himself to the spiritual renewal of the Greek people, gathering the texts of the Philokalia with Saint Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain.

• Vukasin of Klepci

  Martyr, Βουκασίνος

  Vukasin was a Serbian peasant from the village of Klepci in Herzegovina who was taken to the Jasenovac camp during the Second World War. Tradition relates that his executioner offered to spare him if he would praise the regime, and that Vukasin answered, Do your work, child.

• Theodore of Vrsac

  Hierarch, Θεόδωρος Βρσακ

  Theodore was bishop of Vrsac in the Banat and in 1594 led the Serbs of the region in an uprising against Ottoman rule. When the uprising failed he was captured and, refusing to renounce his faith, was flayed alive.
