  Pachomios the Great

  Venerable, Παχώμιος

  St. Pachomios the Great was born in Egypt at the end of the third century. A pagan conscript soldier, he was won to Christ by the kindness of Christians to the troops, and after baptism took up the ascetic life in the desert. At Tabennisi by the Nile he founded the first great communities of monks living a common life under a rule, and thousands gathered under his guidance.

• Achillios of Larisa

  Hierarch, Αχίλλιος Λαρίσης

  Achillios was born in Cappadocia and, after travels in the Holy Land and Rome, was chosen Bishop of Larisa in Thessaly in the fourth century. He took part in the Council of Nicaea in 325, where tradition relates that he confounded the Arians by a miracle.

• Barbaros the Myrrhstreamer

  Venerable, Βάρβαρος ο Μυροβλύτης

  Barbaros was a North African who came to Greece with pirates and lived as a brigand in the region of Aetolia. Moved to repentance, tradition relates, he confessed to a priest and spent years in penance in the wilderness, walking on all fours as a beast.

• Andrew the Hermit

  Venerable, Ανδρέας ο Ερημίτης

  Andrew was born in Monodendri in Epirus and lived as a hermit in a cave near Kalana in the mountains of Aetolia, tradition placing him in the thirteenth century. He spent his life in prayer and hardship and was known for the wonders worked through him.

• Kale the Righteous

  Holy Woman, Καλή

  The synaxarion honors Venerable Kale on May 15, recording only that she lived a life pleasing to God and reposed in peace.

• Silvanos of Tabennisi

  Venerable, Σιλβανός ο Ταβεννησιώτης

  Silvanos had been an actor before entering the monastery of Saint Pachomios at Tabennisi, and at first kept his old frivolity. Warned by the saint that he would be expelled, he was moved to such repentance that he wept continually for the rest of his life.
