Silvanos of Tabennisi

Venerable Silvanos of Tabennisi, the actor who became a model of repentance under Saint Pachomios.

Silvanos had been an actor before entering the monastery of Saint Pachomios at Tabennisi, and at first kept his old frivolity. Warned by the saint that he would be expelled, he was moved to such repentance that he wept continually for the rest of his life.

Saint Pachomios later held him up as the most humble of the brethren. He is honored on the feast of his abbot.

On the New Calendar, Silvanos of Tabennisi is commemorated on May 15. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 28 of the civil calendar.
