Holy Martyr Julian of Tarsus, cast into the sea in a sack of vipers under Diocletian.
Saint Julian was a young man of Tarsus in Cilicia, of a senatorial family, who was arrested during the persecution of Diocletian. Tradition relates that he was dragged from city to city for a year to break his resolve and finally sewn into a sack with vipers and drowned in the sea.
His mother followed him and encouraged him to the end. Saint John Chrysostom preached a homily in his honour, and his relics were venerated at Antioch.

On the New Calendar, Julian of Tarsus is commemorated on June 21. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 4 of the civil calendar.
