New Martyr Niketas of Nisyros, beheaded on Chios in 1732.
Saint Niketas was born on the island of Nisyros to a Christian family that had been forced to embrace Islam. Learning of his origins, he fled to Chios, was received back into the Church and lived for a time at the monastery of Nea Moni.
Desiring martyrdom, he confessed Christ before the Turkish judge in Chios and was beheaded there in 1732.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Niketas of Nisyros is commemorated on June 21. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 4 of the civil calendar.
