Ludmila of Bohemia

Holy Martyr Ludmila, princess of Bohemia and grandmother of St. Wenceslaus.

St. Ludmila was a princess of Bohemia baptized, according to tradition, by St. Methodius, and with her husband Borivoj she spread the Christian faith among the Czechs. She raised her grandson St. Wenceslaus in piety.

Her pagan daughter-in-law Drahomira, resenting her influence, had her strangled in her castle at Tetin in 921. She is commemorated on September 16.

On the New Calendar, Ludmila of Bohemia is commemorated on September 16. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 29 of the civil calendar.
