Luke of Adrianople

Holy New Martyr Luke of Adrianople, monk of Mount Athos, martyred on Mytilene.

St. Luke was born in Adrianople in Thrace at the end of the eighteenth century and, as a boy, was carried off by Turks and forced to accept Islam. Escaping to Mount Athos, he returned to Christ and became a monk at the skete of St. Anne, and later, longing for martyrdom, went to Mytilene.

There he confessed Christ before the Turkish judge and was hanged in 1802. His memory is kept on March 23.

On the New Calendar, Luke of Adrianople is commemorated on March 23. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 5 of the civil calendar.
