  St. Nikon lived in the third century. A soldier's son who came to faith in Christ, he was baptized, embraced the monastic life, and was later made a bishop, gathering many disciples whom he guided in prayer and asceticism. Fleeing persecution, he settled with them in Sicily.

• Luke of Adrianople

  Martyr, Λουκάς ο Αδριανουπολίτης

  St. Luke was born in Adrianople in Thrace at the end of the eighteenth century and, as a boy, was carried off by Turks and forced to accept Islam. Escaping to Mount Athos, he returned to Christ and became a monk at the skete of St. Anne, and later, longing for martyrdom, went to Mytilene.

• Nikon of the Kiev Caves

  Venerable, Νίκων των Σπηλαίων

  St. Nikon was one of the first companions of St. Anthony of the Kiev Caves in the eleventh century, a priest who tonsured many of the early monks of the Lavra, including St. Theodosius. He spent some years in a monastery he founded near the Sea of Azov and returned to become abbot of the Caves, where he adorned the great church with icons.
