Nikon of the Kiev Caves

Venerable Nikon, abbot of the Kiev Caves Lavra.

St. Nikon was one of the first companions of St. Anthony of the Kiev Caves in the eleventh century, a priest who tonsured many of the early monks of the Lavra, including St. Theodosius. He spent some years in a monastery he founded near the Sea of Azov and returned to become abbot of the Caves, where he adorned the great church with icons.

He reposed in 1088, and his memory is kept on March 23.

On the New Calendar, Nikon of the Kiev Caves is commemorated on March 23. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 5 of the civil calendar.
