Holy Martyr Matrona of Thessaloniki.
St. Matrona was a servant in Thessaloniki in the early centuries of the Church, a Christian in the household of a pagan-hearted mistress who hated her faith. Slipping away in secret to pray with the Church, she was discovered, beaten, and confined, yet she would not abandon Christ, and she died of the cruel treatment she received, a true martyr.
The Christians of Thessaloniki honored her from ancient times, and her memory endures as a witness that no station in life is too lowly for sanctity. She is commemorated on March 27.
