Nicholas Planas

Saint Nicholas Planas, the humble priest of Athens.

St. Nicholas Planas was born on the island of Naxos in 1851 and served as a parish priest in Athens for more than fifty years, until his repose in 1932. Of small stature and simple learning, he celebrated the Divine Liturgy nearly every day, commemorating thousands of names, and was loved by the poor of the city for his gentleness and charity.

Among those who attended his all-night vigils were the writers Alexandros Papadiamantis and Alexandros Moraitidis. He was glorified by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1992, and his memory is kept on March 2.

On the New Calendar, Nicholas Planas is commemorated on March 2. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 15 of the civil calendar.
