Philip of Moscow

Hieromartyr Philip, Metropolitan of Moscow, who rebuked Ivan the Terrible.

St. Philip was abbot of the Solovki Monastery and became Metropolitan of Moscow in 1566. He openly denounced the cruelty of Tsar Ivan the Terrible and his oprichniki, refusing him a blessing in the cathedral, and for this was deposed and imprisoned.

He was strangled in his monastic prison in 1569. He is commemorated on January 9.

On the New Calendar, Philip of Moscow is commemorated on January 9. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 22 of the civil calendar.
