Holy New Hieromartyr Philoumenos of Cyprus, guardian of Jacob's Well, martyred in 1979.
Saint Philoumenos was born in Cyprus in 1913 and became a monk of the Jerusalem Patriarchate. In 1979 he was appointed guardian of the shrine of Jacob's Well at Nablus, where the Lord spoke with the Samaritan woman.
On 29 November 1979 (16 November on the old calendar) he was attacked and killed while at prayer in the church. His relics were found incorrupt, and he was glorified by the Patriarchate of Jerusalem in 2009.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Philoumenos of Jacob's Well is commemorated on November 16. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 29 of the civil calendar.
