Pulcheria

Holy Empress Pulcheria.

St. Pulcheria was a Byzantine empress of the fifth century, sister of the Emperor Theodosius II. She took a vow of virginity, guided the empire with wisdom and piety, and was a steadfast defender of the Orthodox faith, laboring for the Fourth Ecumenical Council at Chalcedon which confessed Christ as true God and true man.

She built churches in honor of the Theotokos in Constantinople and used her rank in the service of the Church and the poor. She is commemorated on September 10.

On the New Calendar, Pulcheria is commemorated on September 10. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 23 of the civil calendar.
