Romanos the Lacedaemonian

New Martyr Romanos of Sparta, martyred in Constantinople in the seventeenth century.

St. Romanos was born in the region of Sparta in the Peloponnese. Tradition relates that he was captured by the Turks, refused to renounce Christ, and after suffering was beheaded in Constantinople in 1695.

He is commemorated on January 6, the day of the Theophany.

On the New Calendar, Romanos the Lacedaemonian is commemorated on January 6. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 19 of the civil calendar.
