St. Theophan the Recluse, Bishop of Tambov, spiritual writer.
St. Theophan the Recluse was a Russian bishop of the nineteenth century who, after serving as Bishop of Tambov and Vladimir, retired to the Vysha Monastery and lived in seclusion for over twenty years. From his cell he wrote extensively on the spiritual life and carried on a vast correspondence of counsel.
He translated the Philokalia into Russian and reposed in 1894 on the feast of the Theophany. He is commemorated on January 6.
