  Theophany

  Great Feast, Θεοφάνεια

  The Feast of Theophany, or Epiphany, commemorates the Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ by St. John the Forerunner in the River Jordan. As Christ came up from the waters, the heavens opened, the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove, and the voice of the Father was heard — the first clear revelation of the Holy Trinity.

• Romanos the Lacedaemonian

  Martyr, Ρωμανός ο Λακεδαιμόνιος

  St. Romanos was born in the region of Sparta in the Peloponnese. Tradition relates that he was captured by the Turks, refused to renounce Christ, and after suffering was beheaded in Constantinople in 1695.

• Theophan the Recluse

  Hierarch, Θεοφάνης ο Έγκλειστος

  St. Theophan the Recluse was a Russian bishop of the nineteenth century who, after serving as Bishop of Tambov and Vladimir, retired to the Vysha Monastery and lived in seclusion for over twenty years. From his cell he wrote extensively on the spiritual life and carried on a vast correspondence of counsel.
