Sergius and Herman of Valaam

Venerable Sergius and Herman, founders of the Valaam monastery on Lake Ladoga and enlighteners of Karelia.

Saints Sergius and Herman are honoured as the founders of the monastery of Valaam on an island in Lake Ladoga, from which the Christian faith spread among the Karelian peoples. Tradition places them in the fourteenth century, though some accounts make them earlier, and their relics rest at Valaam.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Sergius and Herman of Valaam is commemorated on June 28. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 11 of the civil calendar.
