  Sts. Cyrus & John the Unmercenaries

  Saint, Κύρος και Ιωάννης

  On June 28 the Church commemorates the translation of the relics of the Holy Unmercenaries Cyrus and John. Cyrus was a physician of Alexandria who healed in the name of Christ without payment, and John a soldier who joined him; together they strengthened the confessors during the persecution of Diocletian and were beheaded for the faith at the beginning of the fourth century.

• Sergius and Herman of Valaam

  Venerable, Σέργιος και Γερμανός οι εν Βαλάμη

  Saints Sergius and Herman are honoured as the founders of the monastery of Valaam on an island in Lake Ladoga, from which the Christian faith spread among the Karelian peoples. Tradition places them in the fourteenth century, though some accounts make them earlier, and their relics rest at Valaam.

• Paul the Physician of Corinth

  Venerable, Παύλος ο Ιατρός

  Saint Paul was a physician of Corinth who became a monk. Tradition relates that a woman falsely accused him of fathering her child and that the infant, only days old, spoke to declare his innocence. He lived thereafter in great asceticism, gifted with healing, and reposed at an advanced age in the seventh century.

• Pappias the Martyr

  Martyr, Παππίας

  Saint Pappias confessed Christ during the persecution of Diocletian and, tradition relates, was tortured and put to death, receiving the crown of martyrdom.

• Sergius the Magistros

  Saint, Σέργιος ο Μάγιστρος

  Saint Sergius was a nobleman of Paphlagonia related to the empress Theodora, who held the rank of magistros in the ninth century. Tradition relates that he was exiled for his defence of the icons and that afterwards he founded a monastery of the Theotokos on his estate, where he ended his days in prayer.

• Seventy Martyrs of Scythopolis

  Martyr, Εβδομήντα Μάρτυρες οι εν Σκυθοπόλει

  The Seventy Martyrs of Scythopolis are remembered in the synaxaria as Christians who confessed Christ together during the persecutions and were put to death. The details of their contest have not been preserved.
