  Sampson the Hospitable

  Venerable, Σαμψών

  St. Sampson the Hospitable was a physician of noble birth who settled in Constantinople in the days of the emperor Justinian. Ordained a priest, he gave his skill and his wealth to the sick and the poor, receiving them into his own house; tradition tells that he healed the emperor himself, and with imperial help there arose the great hospice that bore his name for centuries, one of the famed houses of Christian mercy in the city.

• Joanna the Myrrhbearer

  Holy Woman, Ιωάννα η Μυροφόρος

  Saint Joanna was the wife of Chuza, the steward of Herod Antipas. The Gospel of Luke names her among the women who followed Christ and ministered to Him from their means, and among the myrrhbearers who found the tomb empty on the morning of the Resurrection.

• Cyril Loukaris, Patriarch of Constantinople

  Saint Cyril Loukaris was born in Crete in 1572 and studied in Venice and Padua. He served as patriarch of Alexandria and then, several times, as patriarch of Constantinople, labouring for the education of the Orthodox and resisting Latin influence during a turbulent period.

• Anectus the Martyr

  Martyr, Ανεκτός

  Saint Anectus was a Christian of Caesarea in Cappadocia who, tradition relates, openly confessed Christ during the persecution of Diocletian, encouraged those being tortured, and was himself tortured and beheaded.

• Luke the Hermit

  Venerable, Λουκάς ο Ερημίτης

  Saint Luke is remembered in the Greek synaxaria as a hermit who lived the solitary ascetic life and reposed in peace. The details of his life have not been preserved.

• Pierius of Antioch

  Hierarch, Πιέριος

  Saint Pierius was a priest of Antioch who, tradition relates, was arrested for his confession of Christ during the persecutions and gave his life as a hieromartyr.
