Cyril Loukaris, Patriarch of Constantinople

Hieromartyr Cyril Loukaris, Patriarch of Alexandria and Constantinople, strangled by the Turks in 1638.

Saint Cyril Loukaris was born in Crete in 1572 and studied in Venice and Padua. He served as patriarch of Alexandria and then, several times, as patriarch of Constantinople, labouring for the education of the Orthodox and resisting Latin influence during a turbulent period.

He was strangled by the Ottoman authorities in 1638 and his body cast into the Bosphorus. He was numbered among the saints by the Patriarchate of Alexandria in 2009.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Cyril Loukaris, Patriarch of Constantinople is commemorated on June 27. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 10 of the civil calendar.
