Venerable Simon the Myrrh-gusher, founder of the Monastery of Simonopetra on Mount Athos.
Venerable Simon was a hermit of Mount Athos in the thirteenth century. Tradition relates that he saw a star shining night after night above a great rock and, understanding it as a sign, founded upon it the monastery of the Nativity of Christ, now called Simonopetra.
After his repose his relics gave forth myrrh, and he is honoured as the founder and protector of the monastery.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Simon the Myrrh-gusher is commemorated on December 28. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 10 of the civil calendar.
