  Apostle, Ιάκωβος Ζεβεδαίου

  St. James, the son of Zebedee and elder brother of St. John the Theologian, was called by the Lord from his father's fishing boat to become one of the Twelve. With Peter and John he belonged to the innermost circle of the disciples, present at the Transfiguration and at the agony in Gethsemane.

• Donatus of Euroea

  Hierarch, Δονάτος Ευροίας

  Donatus was Bishop of Euroea in Epirus in the fourth century, in the reign of the emperor Theodosius the Great. Tradition relates that he slew a dragon that poisoned the waters near his city, raised the dead, and brought forth a spring by his prayer.

• Clement the Hymnographer

  Venerable, Κλήμης ο Υμνογράφος

  Clement was a monk and later abbot of the Monastery of the Studion in Constantinople in the ninth century, a disciple of the tradition of Saint Theodore the Studite. He composed many canons and hymns for the feasts of the Church.

• Maximus of Ephesus

  Martyr, Μάξιμος ο εν Εφέσω

  Maximus was a Christian of Ephesus who, in the persecution of the emperor Decius, presented himself before the proconsul and confessed Christ. He refused to sacrifice to the idols.

• Ignatius Brianchaninov

  Hierarch, Ιγνάτιος Επίσκοπος Σταυρουπόλεως

  Ignatius was born in 1807 to a noble family and, after a brilliant beginning as a military engineer, left the world for the monastic life. He became abbot of the Sergiev Hermitage near Saint Petersburg and later Bishop of the Caucasus and Stavropol.

• Aphrodisios and the Thirty Martyrs

  Aphrodisios is commemorated in the Greek synaxaria as a hieromartyr who was put to death for Christ together with thirty companions. The details of their martyrdom have not been preserved.
