  Jeremiah the Prophet

  Prophet, Ιερεμίας

  The Holy Prophet Jeremiah lived in Jerusalem in the seventh and sixth centuries before Christ. Called by God from his youth, he warned the people of Judah of the coming destruction of the city for their unfaithfulness, and wept over its fall in his Lamentations. His words were often rejected, and he suffered imprisonment for speaking the truth; tradition holds that he ended his life in Egypt.

• Akakios, Euthymios and Ignatios the New Martyrs of Athos

  Martyr, Ακάκιος, Ευθύμιος και Ιγνάτιος

  Euthymios of the Peloponnese, Ignatios of Stara Zagora and Akakios of Neochori near Thessaloniki were three young men who had denied Christ under pressure and later repented. Each prepared for confession under the guidance of the elders of the Skete of the Forerunner (Iviron) on Mount Athos.

• Isidora the Fool-for-Christ

  Holy Woman, Ισιδώρα

  Isidora was a nun of the women's monastery of Tabennisi in Egypt in the fourth century. She took the lowliest tasks of the kitchen, ate only scraps, and let the sisters mock her as a simpleton, bearing everything without complaint.

• Tamara the Queen of Georgia

  Saint, Ταμάρα

  Tamara reigned over Georgia from 1184 until her death in 1213, a period remembered as the golden age of the Georgian kingdom. She was known for her humility, her justice toward the poor, and her generous support of churches, monasteries and the Georgian houses on Mount Athos and in the Holy Land.

• Panaretos of Paphos

  Hierarch, Παναρέτος

  Panaretos served as Archbishop of Paphos in Cyprus during the eighteenth century, when the island lay under Ottoman rule. Though a bishop, he kept the strict fasting and prayer of a monk, slept on the ground, and gave what he had to the poor.

• Nikephoros of Chios

  Venerable, Νικηφόρος ο Χίος

  Nikephoros was born on Chios in the eighteenth century and became a monk at the Nea Moni of the island. A learned man, he taught in the school of Chios and was a close friend of Saint Athanasios of Paros and Saint Makarios of Corinth, sharing their zeal for the frequent reception of Holy Communion and the Church's traditions.

• Maria of Fourni

  Holy Woman, Μαρία η Μεθυμοπούλα

  Maria, called Methymopoula, was a young Christian woman of the village of Fourni in eastern Crete. Tradition relates that she was pursued by a Turkish official and, refusing to abandon her faith and her chastity, was killed in 1826.
