Maria of Fourni

New Martyr Maria the Methymopoula of Fourni in Crete, a virgin who died for her faith under Ottoman rule.

Maria, called Methymopoula, was a young Christian woman of the village of Fourni in eastern Crete. Tradition relates that she was pursued by a Turkish official and, refusing to abandon her faith and her chastity, was killed in 1826.

She is honored as a New Martyr of Crete, and the village of Fourni keeps her memory on May 1.

On the New Calendar, Maria of Fourni is commemorated on May 1. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 14 of the civil calendar.
