Nikephoros of Chios

Venerable Nikephoros of Chios, monk, teacher and hymnographer of the Kollyvades tradition.

Nikephoros was born on Chios in the eighteenth century and became a monk at the Nea Moni of the island. A learned man, he taught in the school of Chios and was a close friend of Saint Athanasios of Paros and Saint Makarios of Corinth, sharing their zeal for the frequent reception of Holy Communion and the Church's traditions.

He composed services and lives of saints, including of the New Martyrs, and reposed in peace on Chios in 1821.

On the New Calendar, Nikephoros of Chios is commemorated on May 1. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 14 of the civil calendar.
