  Stephen the First Martyr

  Martyr, Στέφανος Πρωτομάρτυς

  St. Stephen, the Protomartyr and Archdeacon, was one of the seven deacons chosen by the Apostles to serve the first church in Jerusalem. Full of grace and power, he preached Christ boldly; accused before the council, he beheld the heavens opened and the Son of Man at the right hand of God, and was stoned to death, praying for his slayers, while the young Saul, the future Apostle Paul, stood by.

• Theodore Graptus

  Venerable, Θεόδωρος ο Γραπτός

  Venerable Theodore was a monk of the Lavra of St. Sabas who, with his brother Theophanes, was sent to Constantinople to defend the holy icons. Under the emperor Theophilos the brothers were beaten and had verses branded on their faces, whence their name Graptoi, the Branded. Theodore died in exile around 840.

  Hierarch, Θεόδωρος Α' Κωνσταντινουπόλεως

  Theodore was Patriarch of Constantinople in the seventh century, in the days of the emperor Constantine IV. He governed the Church with piety and reposed in peace.

• Luke of Triglia

  Venerable, Λουκάς ο Τριγλινός

  Venerable Luke was a monk and abbot of Triglia on the coast of Bithynia. The Synaxarion records that he laboured in asceticism and reposed in peace.

• Mauricius and the Seventy Martyrs

  Martyr, Μαυρίκιος, Φωτεινός και οι Εβδομήκοντα

  The holy martyr Mauricius was an officer at Apamea in Syria who, with seventy soldiers under him, confessed Christ before the emperor Maximian. His son Photinus was beheaded before his eyes; tradition relates that Mauricius and the others were then smeared with honey and left bound in a marsh, where they died of the stings of insects.
