Theodore Graptus

Venerable Theodore the Branded, Confessor of the holy icons.

Venerable Theodore was a monk of the Lavra of St. Sabas who, with his brother Theophanes, was sent to Constantinople to defend the holy icons. Under the emperor Theophilos the brothers were beaten and had verses branded on their faces, whence their name Graptoi, the Branded. Theodore died in exile around 840.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Theodore Graptus is commemorated on December 27. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 9 of the civil calendar.
