  John Chrysostom

  Great Feast, Ιωάννης Χρυσόστομος

  St. John Chrysostom, the Golden-Mouthed, was born in Antioch in the fourth century. First a monk and then a priest famed for his preaching, he was taken to Constantinople and consecrated its Archbishop. He preached constantly on the Scriptures, gave generously to the poor, and fearlessly rebuked the luxury and injustice of the powerful, for which he was twice driven into exile, dying with words of thanksgiving, glorifying God for all things.

• Markiane the Empress

  St. Markiane was an empress of Constantinople remembered for her piety and charity, identified by tradition with the wife of the Emperor Justin. The synaxaria record that she reposed in peace after a life of good works.

• Peter the Egyptian

  St. Peter the Egyptian was a disciple of Abba Lot in the Egyptian desert in the fifth century, whose sayings are preserved among those of the Desert Fathers. He was known for his extreme poverty and fasting.

• Demetrios of Constantinople

  St. Demetrios was a young Christian of Galata in Constantinople who, tradition relates, was falsely accused of insulting Islam after a quarrel and, refusing to convert, was beheaded in 1784.

• Demetrianos of Tamassos

  Hierarch, Δημητριανός Ταμασού

  St. Demetrianos was Bishop of Tamassos in Cyprus, remembered in the island as a wonderworker. Little is recorded of his life beyond the tradition of his holiness and the miracles worked through his prayers.

• Ashot the King

  Saint, Άσκιοτ ο Βασιλεύς

  St. Ashot Kuropalates was a Georgian prince of the ninth century who ruled in Tao-Klarjeti, restored the churches and monasteries of the region, and supported St. Gregory of Khandzta. Tradition relates that he was murdered in a church.
