  John Climacus

  Venerable, Ιωάννης της Κλίμακος

  St. John Climacus came to Mount Sinai as a young man and spent his whole life there, first in obedience to an elder, then in long years of stillness in the desert, and finally as abbot of the great monastery of Sinai. At the request of another abbot he wrote The Ladder of Divine Ascent, describing thirty steps of the spiritual life leading from renunciation to love.

• Zacharias of Corinth

  Hierarch, Ζαχαρίας Κορίνθου

  St. Zacharias was Metropolitan of Corinth in the seventeenth century. Falsely accused before the Ottoman authorities of stirring up the people against the sultan, he was pressed to accept Islam and, refusing, was tortured and beheaded in 1684 according to the synaxaria.

• John of Jerusalem

  Hierarch, Ιωάννης Ιεροσολύμων

  St. John was Patriarch of Jerusalem in the early centuries of the Church, remembered in the Greek synaxaria as a holy hierarch who governed the Mother of Churches with wisdom and reposed in peace.

• Euboule

  Holy Woman, Ευβούλη

  St. Euboule was the mother of the Great Martyr Panteleimon, a Christian woman of Nicomedia married to a pagan husband. She raised her son in the faith from childhood, and though she reposed before his martyrdom, the seeds she planted bore fruit when he returned to Christ and became the unmercenary physician and martyr honored throughout the Church.

• Viktor the Martyr

  St. Viktor is a martyr whose name the Greek synaxaria record for March 30 with the note that he completed his witness by the sword. Nothing further of his life has been preserved.

• Sophronios of Irkutsk

  Hierarch, Σωφρόνιος Ιρκούτσκ

  St. Sophronios was born in Ukraine in 1704 and became a monk and abbot before being consecrated Bishop of Irkutsk in eastern Siberia in 1753. He traveled through his vast diocese, preaching to the native peoples, building churches and schools, and caring for the poor.
