Sophronios of Irkutsk

Saint Sophronios, Bishop of Irkutsk, missionary of Siberia.

St. Sophronios was born in Ukraine in 1704 and became a monk and abbot before being consecrated Bishop of Irkutsk in eastern Siberia in 1753. He traveled through his vast diocese, preaching to the native peoples, building churches and schools, and caring for the poor.

He reposed in 1771 and was glorified in 1918. His memory is kept on March 30.

On the New Calendar, Sophronios of Irkutsk is commemorated on March 30. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 12 of the civil calendar.
