  John the Theologian

  Apostle, Ιωάννης ο Θεολόγος

  St. John the Theologian, the Beloved Disciple, was the son of Zebedee and brother of James, called from his nets by the Lord. He leaned on the breast of Christ at the Mystical Supper, stood by the Cross when the others had fled, and received the Theotokos into his care. He wrote the Fourth Gospel, three Epistles, and the Revelation.

• Arsenios the Great

  Venerable, Αρσένιος ο Μέγας

  Arsenios was a learned Roman deacon chosen by the Emperor Theodosius as tutor to his sons Arcadius and Honorius. Praying for guidance, he heard a voice telling him to flee from men and be saved, and he departed secretly for the desert of Scetis in Egypt.

• Arsenios of Varnakova

  Venerable, Αρσένιος ο Βαρνακοβίτης

  Arsenios was the founder of the Monastery of the Theotokos of Varnakova in the mountains of Nafpaktia in central Greece, traditionally in the eleventh century. He gathered a brotherhood there and established a rule of common life.

  Venerable, Μήλης ο Υμνωδός

  Little is recorded of Venerable Miles beyond his life of asceticism and his labors as a writer of hymns. The synaxarion honors him on May 8.

• Cassian the Recluse of the Kiev Caves

  Venerable, Κασσιανός ο Έγκλειστος

  Cassian was a monk of the Kiev Caves Lavra who shut himself in a cell in the Far Caves and gave himself to prayer, fasting and obedience. The paterikon of the Lavra remembers him for humility and love of labor.
