Venerable Arsenios the Great, tutor of emperors who fled to the Egyptian desert.
Arsenios was a learned Roman deacon chosen by the Emperor Theodosius as tutor to his sons Arcadius and Honorius. Praying for guidance, he heard a voice telling him to flee from men and be saved, and he departed secretly for the desert of Scetis in Egypt.
There he lived in silence and unceasing tears for many years, avoiding visitors and saying that he had often repented of speaking but never of silence. He reposed around the year 450 and is one of the great fathers of the Egyptian desert.

On the New Calendar, Arsenios the Great is commemorated on May 8. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 21 of the civil calendar.
