  Protection of the Theotokos

  Great Feast, Σκέπη Θεοτόκου

  The feast of the Protection, or Pokrov, commemorates a vision granted in the tenth century at the Blachernae church in Constantinople, where the robe of the Theotokos was kept. During an all-night vigil, St. Andrew the Fool-for-Christ beheld the Mother of God standing above the people, praying with tears and spreading her veil over the faithful as a shelter.

  Apostle, Ανανίας

  Ananias was a disciple living in Damascus when the Lord sent him to the blinded Saul of Tarsus. Laying his hands on him, he restored Saul's sight and baptized him, as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles.

  Venerable, Ρωμανός ο Μελωδός

  Romanos was born in Syria and served as a deacon in Beirut before coming to Constantinople in the reign of Anastasios I, where he was attached to the church of the Theotokos in the Kyros quarter.

  Venerable, Ιωάννης Κουκουζέλης

  John was born at Dyrrachion and, orphaned young, was taken into the imperial school of Constantinople for his remarkable voice, becoming the chief court singer. Longing for the monastic life, he fled secretly to the Great Lavra of Mount Athos, where he at first hid his identity and tended the goats.

• Michael of Zobe and the 36 Monk-Martyrs

  Saint, Μιχαήλ ηγούμενος Ζώβης

  Michael was abbot of the monastery of Zobe near Sebasteia in Armenia in the eighth century, during the reign of Constantine VI. When Saracen raiders overran the region, the abbot and thirty-six of his monks were seized and ordered to renounce Christ.

• Domninos of Thessalonica

  Martyr, Δομνίνος

  Domninos was a Christian of Thessalonica who openly confessed Christ when the emperor Maximian was residing in the city. Brought before him, he refused to sacrifice to the idols and was cruelly tortured.
