  Cyprian and Justina

  Martyr, Κυπριανός και Ιουστίνη

  St. Cyprian was a famed sorcerer of Antioch who was hired to bend the Christian virgin Justina to an unwanted suitor. Every art of his magic was shattered against her prayer and the sign of the Cross, and Cyprian, recognizing a power greater than all his demons, burned his books, was baptized, and in time became a bishop of the Church.

• Theophilos the Confessor

  Venerable, Θεόφιλος ο Ομολογητής

  Theophilos entered monastic life as a youth under the elder Stephen on Mount Selenteia and grew in obedience and prayer. During the iconoclast persecution of Leo the Isaurian he boldly defended the veneration of the holy icons.

  George was a Christian of Asia Minor who was falsely accused by the Turks and pressed to accept Islam. Refusing to deny Christ, he endured beatings and imprisonment.

  Martyr, Θεόδωρος Γαβράς

  Theodore Gavras was a Byzantine nobleman and governor of Trebizond in the late eleventh century, famed for defending the Pontic lands against the Seljuk Turks. Captured in battle, he was urged to accept Islam with promises of honor.

• Cassian the Greek of Uglich

  Venerable, Κασσιανός ο Έλληνας

  Born Constantine, of a princely family of Mangup in the Crimea, he came to Moscow in 1478 in the retinue of the Byzantine princess Sophia Palaiologina. Renouncing the world, he was tonsured at the Ferapontov monastery with the name Cassian.

• Theodore Ushakov the Admiral

  Saint, Θεόδωρος Ουσακώφ

  Theodore Ushakov, born in 1745, commanded the Russian Black Sea fleet and never lost a battle or a ship. In 1798 to 1799 he freed the Ionian Islands from the French and helped establish self-government there, for which the Greeks of Corfu and Cephalonia held him in deep gratitude.
