Holy Great Martyr Theodore Gavras, governor of Trebizond, beheaded by the Turks for refusing to deny Christ.
Theodore Gavras was a Byzantine nobleman and governor of Trebizond in the late eleventh century, famed for defending the Pontic lands against the Seljuk Turks. Captured in battle, he was urged to accept Islam with promises of honor.
He refused, and after torture was beheaded around 1098. The people of Pontus have honored him ever since as their protector and great martyr.
