Cassian the Greek of Uglich

Venerable Cassian the Greek, wonderworker of Uglich, a Byzantine prince who became a monk in Russia.

Born Constantine, of a princely family of Mangup in the Crimea, he came to Moscow in 1478 in the retinue of the Byzantine princess Sophia Palaiologina. Renouncing the world, he was tonsured at the Ferapontov monastery with the name Cassian.

He later founded a monastery near Uglich, where he lived in strict asceticism and reposed at the end of the fifteenth century, being venerated as a wonderworker.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Cassian the Greek of Uglich is commemorated on October 2. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 15 of the civil calendar.
