Righteous Theodore Ushakov, admiral of the Russian fleet and liberator of the Ionian Islands.
Theodore Ushakov, born in 1745, commanded the Russian Black Sea fleet and never lost a battle or a ship. In 1798 to 1799 he freed the Ionian Islands from the French and helped establish self-government there, for which the Greeks of Corfu and Cephalonia held him in deep gratitude.
In retirement he lived near the Sanaksar monastery in prayer and almsgiving, reposing in 1817. He was glorified by the Russian Church in 2001.
