Saint Paula was a Christian maiden of Byzantium who cared for the aged martyr Lucillian and the four young boys, Claudius, Hypatius, Paul and Dionysius, who were imprisoned with him under the emperor Aurelian. After the men were put to death she was arrested for her ministry to the martyrs.

The feast of Sts. Peter and Paul honors together the two chief Apostles. St. Paul, once a persecutor of the Church, was converted by the risen Christ on the road to Damascus and became the Apostle to the Nations.
