  Martyr, Λουκιλλιανός

  The Holy Martyr Lukillian had been a pagan priest who came to faith in Christ in his old age. Baptized, he confessed the Lord openly and suffered in the third century near Byzantium, enduring torments together with young companions who would not deny Christ, and with them received the crown of martyrdom.

• Paula the Virgin Martyr and the Four Infants

  Holy Woman, Παύλη

  Saint Paula was a Christian maiden of Byzantium who cared for the aged martyr Lucillian and the four young boys, Claudius, Hypatius, Paul and Dionysius, who were imprisoned with him under the emperor Aurelian. After the men were put to death she was arrested for her ministry to the martyrs.

  Hierarch, Ιωσήφ, Δωρόθεος και Γρηγόριος οι Ιερομάρτυρες

  At the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821 the Ottoman authorities executed many hierarchs of the Church in Constantinople. Metropolitan Joseph of Thessaloniki, Dorotheos Proios of Adrianople, a noted scholar, and Gregory of Derkoi were among those hanged on 3 June of that year, shortly after the martyrdom of Patriarch Gregory V.

• Kevin of Glendalough

  Venerable, Κέβιν ο εξ Ιρλανδίας

  Saint Kevin was born in Leinster in the sixth century and from his youth sought the solitary life. He settled in the valley of Glendalough, where a great monastic community gathered around him, and it became one of the chief centres of Irish monasticism.

• Achillas of Alexandria

  Hierarch, Αχιλλάς

  Saint Achillas was a priest and head of the catechetical school of Alexandria who succeeded the hieromartyr Peter as archbishop of that city in the early fourth century. Though his episcopate was short, he was honoured for his learning and virtue and reposed in peace.

• Clotilde, Queen of the Franks

  Holy Woman, Κλοτίλδη

  Saint Clotilde, a Burgundian princess, married Clovis, king of the Franks, and by her prayers and example led him to be baptised, an event of great consequence for the Christian history of Gaul. After his death she withdrew to Tours, where she lived in prayer and works of mercy near the tomb of Saint Martin until her repose in 545.
