Kevin of Glendalough

Venerable Kevin, abbot and founder of the monastery of Glendalough in Ireland.

Saint Kevin was born in Leinster in the sixth century and from his youth sought the solitary life. He settled in the valley of Glendalough, where a great monastic community gathered around him, and it became one of the chief centres of Irish monasticism.

Many traditions relate his closeness to the wild creatures and his severe asceticism. He is said to have reposed at a great age, and Glendalough remained a place of pilgrimage for centuries.

On the New Calendar, Kevin of Glendalough is commemorated on June 3. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 16 of the civil calendar.
