  St. Theoktistos was the companion and fellow ascetic of St. Euthymios the Great in the wilderness of Judea in the fifth century. Together they found a cave in a ravine near the Dead Sea, where a monastery grew up around them; when Euthymios withdrew to deeper solitude, Theoktistos remained as abbot and spiritual father of the brethren.

  Saint Theoktiste was a young nun of Lesbos who was carried off by Arab raiders in the ninth century. Landed on the deserted island of Paros, she escaped and hid in the ruined church of the Panagia Ekatontapyliani, where she lived alone for some thirty-five years on wild plants and prayer.
