  Two martyrs named Valentine are commemorated on this day: a presbyter of Rome and the Bishop of Terni in Italy, both of whom suffered in the third century. Tradition relates that they healed the sick and brought many to Christ, for which they were arrested and beheaded.

  St. Paul and the sisters Valentina and Thea were Egyptian Christians brought to Caesarea in Palestine during the persecution of Maximian in the early fourth century. When Thea was tortured, her sister Valentina overturned the pagan altar and was condemned with her.
